Chapter 14 - ISABEL TESTIFIES

Isabel dreaded court.
Then did better than everyone expected.
Not perfect.
Real.
She admitted she signed documents without reading fully.
Admitted she lied to Ana about being happy.
Admitted she became dependent.
Admitted she was afraid.
Luis’s lawyer asked:
“Mrs. Moreno, isn’t it true your sister has always disapproved of your husband?”
Isabel thought.
“Yes.”
“Then isn’t it possible she influenced your current view?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because Ana didn’t make Luis lock my bedroom door.”
Silence.
“Did Ana make him take your phone?”
“No.”
“Did Ana make him redirect your mail?”
“No.”
“Did Ana make him use her forged signature?”
“No.”
“Did Ana make you afraid?”
Isabel looked toward Luis.
“No.”
Then:
“He did.”
Luis looked away.
That was the first time Isabel said it in a courtroom.
Not he made mistakes.
Not we were toxic.
May you like
He did.
Clarity.
