Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE CHANGES

Isabel renovated the living room first.

Not because it needed it.

Because Luis had chosen everything.

Gray sofa.

Black stone table.

Dark curtains.

The room looked expensive and dead.

Isabel replaced the curtains with linen.

Painted one wall pale green.

Moved the couch.

Sold the wine cabinet.

The exact corner where she once curled on the floor became a reading chair.

Ana asked if that felt strange.

“Yes.”

“Bad?”

“No.”

Isabel smiled.

“I want the room to remember me differently.”

That sentence made Ana cry in the kitchen where Isabel couldn’t see.

The house stayed in trust.

Protected.

Not because Isabel was weak.

Because structure mattered.

She controlled occupancy, design, and use.

Ana remained protector only for extraordinary transfers.

Neither sister wanted informal ambiguity again.
