Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN ISABEL USED TO BE

Ana brought Isabel to her apartment for a week.

Not because the house was unsafe physically.

Because every room carried Luis’s voice.

Isabel slept twelve hours the first day.

Then three the next.

She startled at door knocks.

Apologized when she spilled tea.

Asked permission to use the washer.

Ana almost cried every time.

This was not the sister she remembered.

Isabel used to be loud.

Not rude.

Alive.

She danced while cooking.

Argued about movies.

Once drove to New Mexico on a whim because she saw a desert photograph in a magazine.

Luis had not “broken her” in one dramatic event.

He had narrowed her.

Slowly.

Ana called Dr. Naomi Pierce, a therapist specializing in coercive relationships.

After the second session, Naomi told Ana:

“Stop asking Isabel why she stayed.”

Ana flinched.

“I don’t.”

“You think it.”

Fair.

Naomi continued:

“Ask what made leaving feel more dangerous than staying.”

That changed everything.

Isabel’s answer came gradually.

Money.

Shame.

Luis telling her Ana was tired of helping.

Luis telling friends she was unstable.

Luis controlling transportation.

Luis changing passwords.

Luis saying divorce would expose debts “she caused.”

Luis using Vanessa as proof no one else wanted Isabel.

And one phrase over and over:

No one believes women who look ungrateful.

Ana hated him for that sentence.

Because he had understood social cruelty.

Isabel lived in a beautiful house.

Had no visible bruises.

Was married to a successful man.

Why would she complain?

Luis built the cage out of things outsiders called privilege.

That made it harder to see.

Not less real.
