Chapter 19 - THE DAY ISABEL INVITED PEOPLE BACK
Two years after Ana burst through the door, Isabel hosted dinner.
Small.
Eight people.
Ana.
Their mother.
Two cousins.
Evelyn Park.
Maya.
Daniel Ortiz.
Naomi.
People who helped in different ways.
No Luis.
No Vanessa.
No fear.
At one point someone knocked unexpectedly.
Isabel flinched.
Still.
Recovery was not erasure.
She checked the camera.
Delivery driver.
She laughed.
Then opened the door herself.
Ana watched.
No lock from outside.
No permission needed.
Just choice.
After dinner, Isabel raised a glass.
Not wine.
Sparkling water.
“To Ana.”
Ana groaned.
“No speeches.”
Isabel ignored her.
“You opened the door.”
Ana smiled.
“You called me.”
“No.”
Isabel looked around the room.
“I mean you opened the other one.”
Ana’s eyes filled.
“The one where I remembered I still had somewhere to go.”
No one spoke.
Then Evelyn Park said:
May you like
“Well, now I’m crying and I resent both of you.”
Everyone laughed.
