Chapter 4 - WHAT VANESSA KNEW

Vanessa called two days later.

Ana almost didn’t answer.

Then she did.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” Vanessa said.

“Good.”

“I didn’t know the house was Isabel’s.”

Ana laughed softly.

“You knew she was living there.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was his wife.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Then what didn’t you know?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I thought she was refusing to leave.”

Ana frowned.

“What?”

Vanessa explained the story Luis told.

Isabel was unstable.

The marriage had been dead for years.

She refused divorce.

She refused to move out.

The house belonged to Luis through his company.

He was “protecting” Isabel by letting her stay.

Ana listened.

Not because Vanessa was innocent.

She wasn’t.

But lies often require enough truth to remain standing.

Vanessa continued:

“He said she had money problems.”

“She didn’t.”

“He said he paid everything.”

“He didn’t.”

“He said her family cut her off.”

Ana stared.

That one hurt.

“Did he say I cut her off?”

“Yes.”

There.

Ana remembered years of missed calls.

Isabel saying she was tired.

Busy.

Luis saying Ana made her anxious.

Ana had believed distance was her sister’s choice.

Maybe sometimes it was.

But now she wondered how much had been engineered.

Vanessa said:

“There’s more.”

Ana waited.

“Luis used my company.”

“What company?”

“I own an events firm. Small. He ran consulting invoices through it.”

Ana’s pulse changed.

“For what?”

“He said tax structuring.”

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

Honest.

Vanessa continued.

“He paid me from different accounts. One had Isabel’s name on it.”

Ana grabbed a pen.

“What bank?”

Vanessa gave it.

“When?”

“Last year.”

“Amounts?”

“I can send records.”

“Do that.”

Vanessa’s voice shook now.

“I think he used me too.”

Ana looked at Isabel, asleep on the couch with the lights on because darkness made her nervous now.

“Maybe.”

Then Ana said:

“But being used doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“Good.”

Vanessa sent everything.

Within an hour, Maya Feldman called.

“Ana.”

“What?”

“This is bigger.”

“How big?”

“Luis didn’t just borrow against the house. He built a money loop through shell consulting invoices, Vanessa’s company, and an account in Isabel’s name.”

Ana’s stomach turned.

“For what?”

Maya exhaled.

“Looks like he’s laundering debt proceeds into personal income.”

Ana stared.

“Inside my sister’s house?”

“Yes.”

“And then humiliating her like she owned nothing.”

“Yes.”

Ana looked toward the closed front door.

Something settled.

May you like

Not revenge.

Direction.
