Chapter 9 - VANESSA CHANGES SIDES

Vanessa hired her own lawyer.
That was inevitable.
Then she made a choice Luis did not expect.
She cooperated.
Not heroically.
Not because she suddenly loved Isabel.
Because she discovered the condo was mortgaged too.
Luis had taken out a private note against his half without telling her.
Her “equity” was mostly illusion.
The man who told Isabel she was nothing had treated Vanessa as another wallet with better lighting.
Vanessa met Isabel once.
Maya arranged it.
Ana opposed.
Isabel insisted.
The meeting happened in a conference room.
No wineglass.
No red dress.
No house.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
Isabel looked tired.
Vanessa started:
“I’m sorry.”
Isabel said:
“For which part?”
Good.
Ana almost smiled.
Vanessa swallowed.
“For being in your house.”
“And?”
“For believing him.”
“And?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“For laughing.”
Silence.
That mattered most.
The humiliation had witnesses.
Witnesses matter.
Vanessa continued:
“I thought you were manipulating him by refusing divorce.”
Isabel looked at her.
“Did that make it okay to humiliate me?”
“No.”
“Did you ever ask me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because his version benefited me.”
There.
Truth.
Not enough for forgiveness.
Enough for useful testimony.
Vanessa turned over texts.
Luis:
She has nowhere to go.
Ana won’t take her.
The house is effectively mine.
Once the refinance closes, I control the asset.
After that, divorce is easy.
Isabel read them.
Her hands shook.
Ana felt rage rise.
Isabel did not cry.
She simply said:
May you like
“Make copies.”
That was new too.
