Chapter 11 - THE CLEAN BID

The trust hearing drew reporters.
Conrad arrived looking like a man who expected to win through gravity alone.
He did not deny Halcyon ownership anymore.
He argued value.
“Mara rejected a necessary sale because she cannot emotionally separate herself from her mother’s hotel.”
Then Mara’s counsel handed the court three competing indications of interest.
All higher than Halcyon.
One by twenty-two percent.
Conrad’s face tightened.
Mara testified.
“The hotel should probably be sold.”
Everyone looked up.
Conrad stopped.
She continued.
“I was wrong to block every sale. I was not wrong to block this one.”
That sentence changed the room.
She had separated the financial question from the coercion.
Then Naomi introduced the ownership map.
Conrad forty percent.
Ryan ten.
Evelyn fifty.
Evelyn’s share was already frozen under ethics review.
Then the staged-photo evidence.
Continuous recording.
Photo rehearsal.
Signing package.
Seventy-two-hour folder.
Toxicology.
Tonic residue.
Conrad still fought.
“No evidence I put anything in her drink.”
True.
Then Lillian testified.
Ryan prepared the bar.
Conrad instructed her to disable the living-room camera for a “family intervention.”
Miles Danner had visited the house that afternoon.
Why?
Conrad said paperwork.
Miles had not yet testified.
Then Naomi produced storage-unit access logs.
Miles entered the Crescent unit two days before Mara’s incident.
He removed a sealed medical package.
Zolmedrine.
The chain was nearly complete.
Then Miles arrived under subpoena.
He looked at Conrad.
Then at Mara.
“I took the package.”
“Who told you to?”
Miles hesitated.
“Conrad.”
Conrad’s attorney objected.
The judge allowed the answer.
“Did he tell you what it was for?”
“He said Mara needed to sleep through a conversation.”
The room went silent.
Not kill.
Not injure.
Sleep.
Exactly enough to stage.
Then Conrad looked at Ryan.
“You agreed.”
May you like
Ryan looked back.
And for the first time, father and son stopped pretending they were on the same side.
