Chapter 3 - THE SEVENTY-TWO-HOUR WINDOW

The Whitmore Heritage Trust controlled three major assets.
A diversified investment account.
A group of commercial properties.
And the Whitmore Grand Hotel in Boston.
The hotel mattered most.
Value:
Approximately ninety million dollars.
Renovation needs:
Severe.
Mara had blocked its sale twice.
Conrad Holloway wanted it.
Not personally, he claimed.
Through Halcyon Urban Partners.
Ryan had introduced the buyer eight months earlier.
Mara hated the price and distrusted the financing.
Naomi opened the trust agreement.
If Mara became temporarily unable to exercise her vote, authority shifted to a three-person committee.
Ryan.
Evelyn Cross, longtime Whitmore counsel.
And an independent trustee.
Two votes could approve the sale.
Ryan plus Evelyn.
Mara felt cold.
“How long?”
“Until your authority is restored.”
“How fast can they act?”
Naomi found the emergency clause.
Seventy-two hours after incapacity certification.
There it was.
Conrad’s photographs were not blackmail in the ordinary sense.
They were part of an incapacity package.
Then Ryan went public with restraint.
He released no ugly statement.
Only:
“Mara is going through a difficult period. Our family’s priority is her health and safety.”
Smart.
No attack.
Concern.
Then his attorney produced messages from Mara.
One:
Stay out of my trust or I swear I’ll destroy every deal you touch.
Real.
Another:
I barely sleep anymore and I hate everyone.
Also real.
Then a pharmacy history showed Mara had been prescribed sleep medication after her mother died.
She had once taken too much during a panic episode.
Ryan knew.
Now he was building a narrative from facts.
Naomi said:
“He’s not trying to prove you’re a drug addict. He only needs temporary doubt.”
Mara looked at the draft resignation.
“What happens if I sign?”
“You leave the trust committee permanently.”
“And if I don’t?”
“They push incapacity.”
The phone recording had to survive forensic attack.
Naomi sent it for immediate preservation.
Then another file arrived from Ryan’s attorneys.
An intervention agreement.
It stated Mara had voluntarily mixed alcohol with medication and agreed to enter inpatient treatment.
Blank signature.
Same creation date as the resignation.
Mara stared.
“They wrote my confession too.”
Naomi nodded.
Then one more metadata line appeared.
Folder name:
MARA SIGNING PACKAGE.
Created by:
Ryan Holloway.

Three days before the incident.
For the first time, the trap had a title.
