Chapter 4 - THE INTERVENTION STORY
Ryan’s defense was ready before Mara accused him publicly.
He said the signing package was part of a planned family intervention.
Mara had been exhausted.
Emotionally volatile.
Obsessed with the hotel fight.
Drinking more than usual.
Conrad and Ryan wanted her to enter treatment and temporarily step back from financial decisions.
That explained the documents.
Then came the photographs.
Ryan said he photographed Mara because he feared she would wake later and deny how impaired she had been.
The torn blouse?
He claimed it opened while he tried to keep her from choking.
Mara laughed when she read that.
Naomi did not.
“People believe caregiving explanations.”
“Even when the recording says ‘get her face too’?”
“They’ll say Conrad wanted documentation.”
“‘Enough to make her sign’?”
“Intervention agreement.”
Every phrase had an alternate meaning.
Then toxicology returned with the exact compound.
Zolmedrine.
A sedative used in some outpatient procedures.
Mara had never been prescribed it.
Ryan said he had never heard of it.
Conrad too.
Then his housekeeper, Lillian Price, agreed to speak.
She remembered Ryan alone at the bar before Mara arrived.
She also remembered finding an opened tonic bottle afterward.
Police seized it.
Residue:
Zolmedrine.
Good.
Then Ryan’s fingerprints were found on the bottle.
Bad for him.
But he explained:
“It was my father’s bar. I touched half the bottles.”
Possible.
Then Conrad attacked the hotel issue.
He sent independent appraisals to the trust court.
The Whitmore Grand needed at least sixty million dollars in renovations.
Occupancy was falling.
Labor costs rising.
Halcyon’s offer was financially defensible.
Mara had opposed it partly because her mother loved the hotel.
That was true.
Conrad told the court:
“Mara is allowing grief to override fiduciary judgment.”
Mara read the line three times.
It hurt because part of her feared he was right.
Then Naomi found Halcyon’s ownership.
Forty percent through Wyoming entity CH Capital.
Beneficial owner:
Conrad Holloway.
Ten percent through RH Advisory.
Beneficial owner:
Ryan Holloway.
Mara stared.
“They’re buying my hotel from me.”
Naomi nodded.
“Through a company they told you was independent.”

Now the intervention looked less like concern.
It looked like acquisition strategy.
