Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO SAID SHE DIDN'T KNOW

Evelyn denied ever agreeing to certify Mara as incapacitated based on photographs.

“I agreed to request an independent medical review.”

Then why did Conrad use her name?

Maybe because he assumed.

Maybe because she had said something similar.

Maybe because she lied now.

The evidence did not settle it.

Mara learned to stop demanding instant certainty.

Then the trust court issued temporary protections.

No hotel sale.

No change in Mara’s voting authority.

For forty-eight hours.

Enough time to investigate.

Ryan responded by filing a defamation claim.

He said Mara falsely accused him of drugging her.

He also submitted a behavioral report from Dr. Henry Wexler, a psychiatrist Mara had seen twice after her mother died.

The report described insomnia, panic attacks, and “episodic distrust.”

Mara stared.

“How did he get this?”

Naomi looked furious.

“Either you authorized release once or someone used your old portal access.”

Mara remembered signing broad insurance forms.

Maybe.

Ryan had turned therapy into evidence.

Then Dr. Wexler clarified publicly that Mara had never been diagnosed with substance abuse or psychosis.

That helped.

But the phrase episodic distrust kept circulating.

Then Lillian, Conrad’s housekeeper, produced a new detail.

Three days before the couch incident, Ryan asked her to place Mara’s favorite wine in the refrigerator.

He also asked which glasses Mara usually used.

Preparation.

Then the security system showed Conrad disabling the living-room camera for exactly forty minutes.

His explanation:

Family privacy during intervention.

Possible.

Then photo metadata proved Ryan’s camera settings were tested earlier that afternoon.

Practice shots.

Same couch.

Same angle.

No Mara.

Naomi said:

“He rehearsed.”

Mara felt sick.

Then one practice image showed something in the background.

A manila folder on the table.

Label:

HALCYON CLOSING — 72 HR.

The financial motive and staged photographs existed in the same room before Mara arrived.

Finally.

Then Ryan called her directly.

She answered on speaker with Naomi present.

“Mara, stop.”

“You stop.”

“You think my father forced me into this.”

“Did he?”

Silence.

Then:

“You have no idea what Conrad does when someone says no.”

Mara went still.

Ryan’s voice changed.

For the first time, he sounded less like a conspirator and more like someone trapped inside one.

Then he whispered:

May you like

“I can prove he planned this before I knew.”

And hung up.
