Chapter 13 - THE MAN BETWEEN FAMILIES

Miles Danner had worked for Caroline Whitmore as estate operations manager.
He knew schedules.
Storage.
Legal files.
Medical logistics.
After Caroline’s death, he left quietly.
Then joined Conrad Holloway.
Conrad claimed Miles was simply competent.
Miles told a different story.
“Conrad wanted information about Whitmore assets.”
“How early?” Naomi asked.
“Before Caroline died.”
Mara froze.
“Why?”
Miles looked uncomfortable.
“Holloway Development wanted the Grand Hotel site.”
Years before Halcyon.
Conrad had been pursuing the property through different entities.
Caroline refused every approach.
Then she died.
Mara inherited voting power.
Conrad waited.
Ryan’s introduction came later.
The relationship was not the beginning.
It was strategy version three.
Then Miles revealed something worse.
Caroline had once considered selling the hotel herself.
Why didn’t she?
Because Conrad’s earlier bid relied on financing from a bank that would gain foreclosure rights over adjacent Whitmore properties.
A trap.
Caroline rejected it.
Conrad never forgave her.
Mara stared.
“So he came through me.”
Miles nodded.
Then Naomi asked about the sedative.
Miles admitted removing it from estate storage.
“Did Conrad know where it came from?”
“Yes.”
“Did Ryan?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Miles said:
“Caroline originally ordered it after Mara’s panic episode.”
Mara interrupted.
“Evelyn said that.”
Miles shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Evelyn signed the purchase form. Caroline didn’t request it.”
Evelyn went white.
“Why would you say that?”
“Because you asked me to destroy the invoice.”
Silence.
Evelyn’s old secret had just become larger.
Maybe she had believed Mara needed treatment.
Maybe she had been creating incapacity evidence even then.
Then Miles handed over an email from Evelyn to Caroline’s physician.
If Mara cannot stabilize, we may need a temporary voting solution.
Date:
Four years earlier.
Before Ryan.
Before Halcyon.
May you like
Before Conrad’s current scheme.
The idea of using Mara’s mental state to alter control had existed inside her own family office first.
