Chapter 12 - THE FATHER AND SON
Ryan testified under a cooperation agreement.
He admitted staging the photographs.
Admitted chasing Mara.
Admitted knowing the pictures would be used to pressure her.
He denied knowing the wine contained zolmedrine.
Conrad called him a liar.
“You watched me prepare everything.”
Ryan snapped:
“I watched you plan the intervention.”
“You knew.”
“I knew she’d be sleepy. I thought she’d taken her own medication.”
Mara listened.
Both versions were self-serving.
Maybe neither was fully true.
Then Naomi asked Ryan:
“Why did you say ‘before she wakes up’?”
Ryan looked down.
“Because Conrad said she’d sleep for twenty minutes.”
There.
He knew she had been deliberately made unconscious somehow.
Maybe not the compound.
Enough.
Then Conrad attacked Ryan’s motives.
“He wanted Halcyon more than I did.”
Ryan laughed.
“You founded it before I met Mara.”
Conrad’s face changed.
That landed.
Then Ryan revealed the first-date setup.
Conrad had researched Mara’s trust.
Arranged the introduction.
Encouraged the relationship.
Ryan insisted love developed later.
Conrad called that pathetic.
Mara watched them destroy each other.
No satisfaction.
Just clarity.
Then Evelyn testified.
She admitted helping design the legal intervention documents but denied knowledge of the staged photos.
Audio captured Conrad saying Evelyn could certify the review.
She claimed Conrad assumed.
The judge did not fully believe her.
Then Naomi asked:
“Would you have voted for Halcyon if Mara entered treatment?”
“Yes.”
“While owning fifty percent of Halcyon?”
“Yes.”
That conflict alone ended her credibility.
The court removed Ryan and Evelyn from emergency trust authority.
Conrad had no formal trust role.
The hotel sale was frozen pending auction.
Mara should have felt free.
Instead Naomi handed her one more file.
Miles Danner’s employment agreement.
He had joined Holloway Development not recently.
Five years earlier.
Before Mara’s mother died.
Before Ryan met Mara.
