Chapter 7 - THE SON WHO WANTED IMMUNITY

Ryan asked for a private meeting through counsel.

Mara refused to meet alone.

They sat in Naomi’s conference room with lawyers.

Ryan looked exhausted.

No polished smile.

He placed a flash drive on the table.

“My father built the incapacity strategy.”

Conrad’s attorneys called that a lie within an hour.

Ryan continued.

Two months earlier, Conrad showed him a trust-flow model.

If Mara became unavailable, Ryan and Evelyn could control the hotel vote.

Ryan admitted he liked the idea.

“Because you wanted the hotel.”

“Yes.”

“Because you owned Halcyon.”

“Yes.”

No denial now.

Then:

“But I didn’t drug you.”

Mara stared.

“You tore my blouse.”

“I staged the pictures.”

“You moved my arm.”

“Yes.”

“You chased me.”

“Yes.”

Every admission sounded worse.

Then Ryan said:

“My father told me the wine would only make you sleepy because you’d already taken your medication.”

“I hadn’t.”

“I know that now.”

Mara wanted to hit him.

Didn’t.

“What did you think the photos were for?”

“To scare you into signing the intervention and resigning from the trust.”

“And if I refused?”

Ryan looked down.

“Conrad said he’d release them and challenge your competence.”

So Ryan was guilty.

Maybe not of administering the drug.

But absolutely of coercion.

Then he showed them the flash drive.

Conrad’s planning notes.

One entry:

Sedation creates objective narrative.

Another:

Photographs must establish disarray.

Another:

Ryan handles emotional pressure.

Mara’s stomach turned.

Then one line:

Evelyn certifies governance action after packet delivery.

Evelyn denied seeing it.

Ryan claimed she had.

Who was lying?

Then another file.

Conrad to Ryan:

She’ll sign because she still thinks you love her.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Mara looked at him.

That line hurt more than the photos.

Because there was no legal argument around it.

Then Naomi asked:

“Why turn now?”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Because my father’s new agreement removes me from Halcyon if I’m charged.”

Conrad planned to discard him too.

Self-interest.

At least honest.

Then Ryan added:

“There’s another reason.”

He looked at Mara.

“Conrad didn’t choose you because of the hotel.”

“What?”

“He chose you because of the trust amendment.”

Mara frowned.

“What amendment?”

Ryan looked at Naomi.

“The one her mother signed before she died.”

May you like

Naomi went still.

There was no such amendment in the current trust file.
