Chapter 8 - THE MISSING AMENDMENT

The missing amendment was found in the Whitmore estate archive.

Signed by Mara’s mother, Caroline, eighteen months before her death.

It changed one thing.

If Mara married before age thirty, no spouse could directly inherit control of Whitmore Heritage.

Good.

Protective.

But the amendment also added a temporary governance clause.

If Mara became incapacitated, a spouse could serve on the emergency committee.

That was how Ryan got his seat.

Mara stared.

“My mother created the mechanism.”

Naomi nodded.

“For continuity. Not abuse.”

Still.

The tool existed.

Then another page appeared.

Caroline had wanted Evelyn Cross to serve as independent legal monitor.

Evelyn’s involvement was built in from the beginning.

Conrad later learned the structure through Ryan.

Or so Ryan claimed.

Then Mara noticed a handwritten note in Caroline’s file.

Mara is impulsive when grieving. Do not let a partner use fear to control her.

Her mother had anticipated the danger in general.

Not Ryan.

Then Naomi found an access log.

Conrad requested copies of the trust amendment nine months before Mara and Ryan became engaged.

Why?

He had no official reason then.

Ryan claimed he did not know.

Conrad’s explanation:

Due diligence for potential family investment.

Weak.

Then another record.

Halcyon Urban Partners incorporated one month later.

The timeline changed.

Conrad had researched Mara’s trust before Halcyon existed.

Then Ryan started dating her three months after that.

Mara stared at him during the next interview.

“Did your father tell you to date me?”

Ryan went pale.

“No.”

“Did he know who I was before we met?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

There.

Ryan had not randomly fallen into her life.

He knew she controlled the hotel.

He insisted the relationship became real later.

Maybe.

That made it worse.

Then Mara received a message from an unknown email account.

Subject:

ASK RYAN ABOUT THE FIRST DATE.

Attached:

A restaurant reservation.

Booked by Conrad’s assistant.

For Mara and Ryan.

The night they supposedly met by chance.
