Chapter 11 - THE COUNTERATTACK
Victoria went public.
Not with everything.
A carefully chosen statement through her attorney:
A private employment dispute has been distorted into a marital scandal. Mrs. Carter denies any intent to harm her child and has concerns regarding unauthorized surveillance and a household employee’s inappropriate access to confidential family documents.
No names.
But tabloids identified Elena within hours.
Then one outlet published:
NANNY AT CENTER OF CARTER MARRIAGE MELTDOWN.
Elena cried in the staff kitchen.
Marcus wanted to sue everyone.
Rachel said:
“Not everything at once.”
Sterling agency scheduled a formal review.
Elena attended.
No Marcus in room.
She wanted that.
She presented:
references from four former families,
pediatric first-aid credentials,
employment history,
Leo’s care logs,
the motion clip,
the brand emails stating she would be “replaced.”
Sterling’s director asked:
“Did you photograph confidential documents?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the contract used Leo’s image and claimed Marcus signed it.”
“Did you intend to sell or disclose them publicly?”
“No.”
“Did you send them to anyone before the assault?”
“No.”
Honest.
Then the director asked:
“Do you believe you are more important to Leo than Victoria?”
Elena paused.
Dangerous.
Then:
“No.”
She swallowed.
“I believe Leo needs adults who care more about whether he feels safe than about what role they think they deserve.”
