Chapter 3 - THE WORD GOOD

Michael did not deny it.
At first.
He changed the meaning.
“I said good because Mom told me she finally handled the hair issue.”
Rachel stared.
“You knew Linda was going to shave her head?”
“I knew she was going to cut it.”
“Against Emma’s will?”
“She’s six.”
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“That is not an answer.”
Michael rubbed his face.
“She was making everyone late every morning.”
Rachel laughed once.
“You don’t even do her hair.”
“That’s not the point.”
“What is the point?”
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
“Emma has become impossible.”
Emma heard.
Her face folded inward.
Rachel saw it.
That was when she realized this was bigger than Linda.

A story Rachel had never been allowed to read.
