Chapter 10 - THE GARDENER WHO HEARD TOO MUCH
Carlos Mendoza had worked on the Carter property for seven years.
He knew when family arguments were not his business.
So he stayed away.
Until subpoenaed.
Carlos did not see the first contact directly.
He was behind a hedge line.
But he heard Margaret shout:
“You lazy bitch! Clean this damn lawn!”
Then Emily:
“DON’T TOUCH ME!”
Seconds later, Margaret screamed.
Carlos came around the hedge.
He saw:
Margaret on grass,
Ashley charging,
Emily turning.
Then the slap.
Not the beginning.
Still useful.
Then Rachel asked:
“Did Mrs. Carter speak to you before the incident?”
Carlos nodded.
“She asked me to take lunch early.”
“When?”
“About fifteen minutes before.”
“Was that normal?”
“No.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I was fixing irrigation.”
Margaret’s attorney objected to implication.
Fair.
Asking a gardener to leave did not prove an assault plan.
Then Carlos remembered:
“She asked if the backyard cameras were working.”
Silence.
“When?”
“Same morning.”
Margaret’s face changed.
Then phone records.
A text from Ashley to Margaret:
Camera off?
Margaret:
Daniel handled it.
Ashley:
Good.
That was stronger.
Still not:
We are going to attack her.
But clear evidence they wanted no neutral recording.
Then another message.
Margaret to Ashley:
She needs to leave angry, not negotiate.

Rachel read it twice.
That sentence moved the case.
