Chapter 5 - DANIEL KNEW

Emily confronted Daniel.

Privately.

No Margaret.

No Ashley.

“Did you know about the fifth-year trust?”

Daniel stopped moving.

That was answer enough.

“How long?”

“Years.”

Emily laughed.

“You never told me.”

“It’s family planning.”

“It names me.”

“It names spouse.”

“I am the spouse.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Then he said:

“You don’t understand what Dad did.”

“So explain it.”

Daniel paced.

If the trust vested, Margaret would lose voting concentration.

Daniel would gain some beneficial rights.

Emily would gain others.

Major distributions above certain thresholds would require independent approval.

Margaret hated that.

But Daniel also hated parts of it.

Why?

Because the trust would reduce his personal flexibility.

Some growth interests he expected to control himself would instead sit in a shared marital structure.

Emily looked at him.

“So you wanted me out too.”

Daniel did not answer.

That hurt more than yes.

Then:

“I wanted time.”

“For what?”

“To renegotiate.”

“With your mother?”

“Yes.”

“Before Saturday?”

“Yes.”

Emily stared.

“And the fight?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t know she was going to do that.”

Possible.

Then:

“But you knew she wanted me gone.”

Daniel looked away.

May you like

There.

Complicity without full knowledge.
