Chapter 11 - DANIEL CHOOSES MONEY
Emily gave Daniel one chance.
Not to repair the marriage.
To tell the truth.
They met at Rachel’s office.
Emily asked:
“Did you intend to divorce me before your mother came over?”
Daniel said:
“No.”
“Did I intend to leave you?”
“No.”
“Then tell the trustee we were not separated before the fight.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“If I do that, the trust vests.”
“Yes.”
“Mom loses control.”
“Yes.”
“She’ll freeze other distributions.”
“Maybe.”
“She’ll destroy Ashley.”
Emily laughed.
“Ashley attacked me because she borrowed against money she hoped I’d never touch.”
Daniel looked down.
Then:
“You don’t understand the pressure.”
Emily’s face hardened.
“I understand perfectly.”
He wanted:
his marriage,
his mother’s approval,
his family distributions,
and leverage over the trust.
All at once.
Emily continued:
“You turned off the camera.”
Daniel said:
“I thought we were going to talk.”
“You knew they wanted me out.”
“Yes.”
“You let them come anyway.”
“Yes.”
“You threw me onto the ground.”
“To stop the fight.”
“You never asked what happened.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“I can’t side against my family.”
Emily stared.
“You married me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Wrong answer.
Then:
“This isn’t about sides.”
Emily stood.
“It became about sides the second you chose money over telling the truth.”
She left.
Daniel stayed.
That was the moment the marriage actually ended.
