North Peak Resorts denied wrongdoing.
Then one consultant appeared repeatedly.
Gavin Holt.
Former private security.
Current “land acquisition specialist.”
He had communicated with Rachel.
Also Colin.
Also the rental agency.
Messages:
GAVIN:
If Neftali blocks access, closing dies.
RACHEL:
I know.
GAVIN:
Then solve your family problem.
Rachel replied:
Working on it.
Ugly.
Still ambiguous.
Then a later text, crash night:
The communication between Rachel and Gavin began months earlier.
Gavin was not presented as criminal muscle.
He was a land-acquisition fixer.
He persuaded holdout owners.
Resolved access disputes.
Found political pressure points.
Mostly lawful.
Sometimes ugly.
Rachel valued him because he got “impossible” deals unstuck.
Neftali hated him.
Once, at a board dinner, Gavin joked:
“Every holdout has a number.”
Neftali answered:
“My mother doesn’t.”
Gavin smiled.
“Everybody does.”
Eulalia had been present.
She remembered laughing politely.
Now she wished she had not.
Then a later text, crash night:
RACHEL:
He’s at the cabin.
GAVIN:
Stay there.
Rachel:
No. I’m leaving.
Gavin:
Good.
That was worse.
Rachel had told Gavin where Neftali was.
Did she know what Gavin planned?
She denied.
Gavin was arrested after investigators found Neftali’s second phone in a storage locker rented under an alias tied to him.
No body.
No Neftali.
Then Gavin finally cooperated.
His cooperation was not generous.
Police had:
the rental record,
Neftali’s second phone,
messages,
and gas-station footage.
Gavin’s best option was to narrow intent.
He insisted Rachel never said:
kidnap him.
She said:
keep him from blowing up the deal tonight.
Gavin interpreted that as pressure.
He claimed the abduction happened after Neftali tried to leave and threatened to call state investigators immediately.
He made a choice.
Not an order.
That distinction mattered to Rachel’s criminal exposure.
Eulalia hated it.
She wanted one sentence proving Rachel caused everything.
There wasn’t one.
Instead there were many smaller decisions made by people who assumed the deal mattered more than Neftali’s freedom.
Then Gavin finally cooperated.
He said he intercepted Neftali on the ranger road.
Not to kill him.
To scare him into delaying the North Peak disclosure.
Neftali fought back verbally.
Refused.
Gavin forced him into the rental SUV and drove.
Kidnapping.
Then, according to Gavin, Neftali escaped at a gas stop forty miles away.
Possible.
Security footage confirmed a man resembling Neftali exiting the rear side of the vehicle and running behind a service building.
Alive after midnight.
Eulalia cried when she saw it.
Her son survived the fake crash.
