Chapter 12 - THE SON WHO CHOSE TO STAY DEAD

Neftali was found sixteen days later.

Alive.

At a church shelter in another state.

He had used a false first name.

Lost weight.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

No dramatic injuries.

When Eulalia saw him, she slapped him.

Then hugged him.

Then slapped his shoulder again.

“You buried me alive!”

He cried.

“I know.”

Rachel had not buried him physically.

But Neftali had allowed Eulalia to believe he was dead longer than necessary.

Why?

Fear.

After escaping Gavin, Neftali realized:

Rachel had staged a coffin,

North Peak had used a fixer,

company systems were compromised,

and someone had access to his phone account.

He believed calling Eulalia could expose her location and put her at risk.

So he stayed hidden until Maya’s investigator located him through a church outreach contact.

Eulalia was furious.

“You could’ve sent one message.”

“I didn’t know who had your phone.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

There was no answer that fixed that.

Then Neftali asked:

“Did you find the box?”

“Yes.”

“Then you knew.”

“After your wife threw me into the mountains.”

Neftali looked devastated.

He had not known Rachel would evict her immediately.

That part was Rachel’s choice.

Then he said:

Before that, Eulalia demanded the full story from Neftali.

No lawyer.

No Maya.

No investigator.

Just mother and son.

He admitted he had considered staging a short disappearance.

Not death.

He wanted to step away from Carter Ridge for forty-eight hours while Maya froze the North Peak closing and audited documents.

He feared Rachel would use marital pressure to make him reverse course.

So he planned to hide at the church shelter through a friend of his father.

That was why Rachel’s messages about “disappearing” contained fragments of truth.

Eulalia stared.

“You planned to vanish?”

“Briefly.”

“And tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After I got somewhere safe.”

“That is a terrible plan.”

“I know.”

“You are forty.”

“I know.”

“Too old for this.”

He laughed weakly.

Then cried again.

The manipulation worked partly because Neftali had actually been secretive.

Rachel did not need to invent that.

She only pushed it into something monstrous.

Then he said:

“I never amended your occupancy rights.”

Eulalia answered:

May you like

“I know.”

For the first time, the family lie began to collapse completely.
