Chapter 13 - RACHEL'S LAST DEFENSE
Rachel’s defense became narrower.
She admitted:
helping stage the empty coffin,
lying to Eulalia,
using Colin to manage the funeral,
trying to remove Eulalia from the house,
possessing the forged trust amendment,
and telling Gavin where Neftali was.
She denied:
creating the forgery,
ordering kidnapping,
planning physical harm,
or believing Gavin would abduct Neftali.
Then why stage the funeral?
Rachel said Neftali had threatened to disappear before.
She believed after the cabin argument that he had done exactly that.
Colin took the SUV.
The SUV crashed later.
No Neftali.
Rachel assumed he wanted to be declared dead temporarily to freeze creditors and kill the deal.
That sounded absurd.
Then Maya found an audio recording Neftali made inside the cabin.
Neftali:
“You are not telling my mother I’m dead.”
Rachel:
“If you disappear, I will do what I have to do.”
Neftali:
“Rachel.”
Rachel:
“I am not losing everything because you suddenly grew a conscience.”
There.
Not murder.
Not kidnapping.
But willingness to weaponize death.
Then another:
Rachel:
“Your mother doesn’t need that house.”
Neftali:
“That isn’t your decision.”
Rachel:
“She has the cabin.”
Neftali:
“The cabin isn’t winterized.”
Rachel:
“Then fix it.”
Neftali:
“She is sixty-eight.”
Rachel:
“She is an obstacle.”
Silence.
Eulalia stopped the recording.
Maya asked whether she wanted to continue later.
“No.”
She pressed play again.
Rachel had finally said the quiet part aloud.
Not mother.
Not widow.
Not family.
Obstacle.
That was why Eulalia’s eviction happened so quickly.
The funeral grief was not the cause.
It was cover.
Then another:
Neftali:
“The trust amendment is fake.”
Rachel:
“It fixes a problem your father created.”
That was devastating.
