Chapter 5 - THE BODY NO ONE SAW
Maya obtained the death records.
Something was wrong immediately.
The body identification form was signed by Rachel.
Not Eulalia.
Not dental comparison.
Not DNA.
Visual identification.
But Rachel had told Eulalia the body was too damaged to view.
Contradiction.
Then the coroner’s report.
Cause of death:
pending final determination.
Not finalized.
Yet Rachel had arranged burial.
The funeral home received a temporary authorization based on family request and preliminary identification.
Legal, though unusual.
Then the coffin.
Closed.
Maya requested exhumation through emergency court process.
Rachel fought it.
Hard.
Her lawyer argued harassment of a grieving widow.
Eulalia listened in court.
Rachel cried.
Beautifully.
“My husband is dead and his mother cannot accept it.”
The judge looked at Eulalia.
She wanted to scream.
Instead, Maya presented:
Neftali’s hidden phone,
the pre-recorded message timestamped before the crash,
the ring Rachel claimed was buried with him,
and the inconsistent identification record.
Exhumation granted.
Two days later, the coffin was opened under official supervision.
No Neftali.
Inside:
weighted construction bags,
blankets,
and sealed ceremonial items.
Eulalia nearly collapsed.
Rachel’s lawyer went white.
Rachel herself said:
“I didn’t know.”
Possible.
Then investigators asked:
“Who arranged the sealed coffin?”
The funeral director, Arthur Bell, was interviewed.
He had thirty-two years in the business and looked sick when shown the empty coffin.
Rachel’s team had told him the remains arrived sealed under special handling because the accident involved severe trauma and ongoing investigation.
A transfer case was delivered.
He never opened it.
That was not standard in every circumstance, but documentation appeared legitimate.
The chain-of-custody form carried a county seal.
Forensic review later showed the seal had been digitally copied from a prior document.
Bell had been deceived.
He asked Eulalia through investigators whether she wanted an apology.
She said no.
Not because he did nothing wrong.
Because she was tired of collecting apologies from people who trusted paperwork more than common sense.
Then investigators asked:
“Who arranged the sealed coffin?”
Funeral home records pointed to a logistics company.
Authorized by:
Rachel Carter’s assistant.
Rachel fired the assistant months earlier? No. Current assistant.
