Chapter 6 - RACHEL'S VERSION

Rachel did not confess.
She did something smarter.
She admitted part.
Yes, she knew the coffin did not contain Neftali.
Why?
Because she believed Neftali had staged his own disappearance.
Eulalia stared when Maya relayed it.
Rachel claimed Neftali had been under federal scrutiny for timber-export accounting irregularities.
False? Maybe partly.
She said he told her he needed to disappear temporarily.
He asked her to create a funeral so creditors, business rivals, and investigators would stop looking.
Rachel said she cooperated because she loved him.
Then he vanished for real.
Did Rachel have proof?
Texts.
From Neftali’s number:
IF THE CAR GOES OVER, YOU HANDLE THE REST.
Another:
CLOSED COFFIN. NO QUESTIONS.
Another:
MOM CANNOT KNOW.
Devastating.
Maya did not dismiss them.
She examined metadata.
Messages came from Neftali’s phone account.
But not necessarily his physical phone.
The carrier showed web-login access.
IP address:
Carter Ridge corporate office.
Could be Neftali.
Could be Rachel.
Could be Colin.
Then Rachel added another bomb.
She also produced a handwritten note she claimed came from Neftali:
If this turns ugly, let everyone think I’m gone.
Eulalia recognized his handwriting.
Maya did too.
Forensic examination found it genuine.
That mattered.
Rachel was not inventing every part of her story.
Then Maya found context.
The note came from a planning conversation three months earlier about Neftali taking a leave from Carter Ridge if the North Peak deal became public litigation.
“Gone” meant absent from management.
Not dead.
Rachel had preserved the sentence.
Then repurposed it.
That was her real talent.
She did not always fabricate from nothing.
She took true fragments and forced them into more useful meanings.
That made her dangerous in court.
And familiar to Eulalia.
Rachel had done the same after the funeral:
Neftali wanted space from his mother.
Maybe once true after an argument.
Therefore:
he wanted Eulalia out of the house.
Truth stripped of context became a weapon.
Then Rachel added another bomb.
Neftali had withdrawn $900,000 from company accounts two days before the crash.
Now he looked less like victim.
Maybe he had fled.
Maybe Rachel was cleaning up his mess.
Eulalia hated uncertainty.

Maya said:
“Good. Uncertainty keeps us honest.”
