Months later, Ava still asked permission for everything.
“Can I have milk?”
“Yes.”
“Now?”
“Yes.”
“Even if someone comes?”
Grant stopped.
Then crouched.
“Yes.”
Ava stared at him.
“Even insurance people?”
“Yes.”
Grant opened the refrigerator.
Placed the milk on a low shelf.
Ava could reach it herself.
Reasonable rules still existed.
Ask before pouring a giant glass.
Use two hands.
Clean spills.
But no food tied to secrecy.
No punishment for being visible.
Lucas started calling the laundry room simply:

“laundry.”
That felt like progress.
