Chapter 3 - THE CLAIM
The first eight hotel nights were legitimate.
No dispute.
Room charges:
$3,280.
Meals and incidentals:
$1,140.
Laundry and transportation:
$620.
Then the family moved home.
But the claims continued.
Oak Ridge Suites issued invoices showing:
two rooms,
twenty-nine additional nights,
then another twenty-one,
then another fourteen.
Total billed to the insurer over four months:
$47,860.
Lakeshore had reimbursed:
$39,400
and was reviewing another $8,460.
Grant stared at the figures.
“We weren’t there.”
Patricia answered quickly:
“Not every night.”
Evan asked:
“How many nights?”
Silence.
Grant looked at Ava.
“Did you sleep at the hotel after I left for Indianapolis?”
Ava shook her head.
“No.”
“Last month?”
“No.”
“Any time after your birthday?”
Ava thought.
“Once when Aunt Melissa made popcorn.”
