Chapter 15 - THE FRONT DOOR

One year later, Grant came home from work carrying a small suitcase.

Not because he had been away for days.

One overnight conference.

That was his new limit for now.

Ava heard the key.

Ran to the door.

Lucas followed.

Grant opened it.

No screaming.

No bag thrown outside.

No milk on the floor.

Ava hugged him.

“You came back.”

“I said I would.”

Patricia no longer lived there.

Her contact with the children remained supervised and infrequent.

The insurance restitution plan was still being paid.

Melissa had sold Oak Ridge Suites after losing insurer contracts.

The house was repaired.

Basement dry.

The laundry room ordinary.

Grant carried his suitcase inside.

Then noticed a small bag near the front door.

He froze.

Ava saw.

“That’s mine.”

“Where are you going?”

“Sleepover at Mia’s.”

Grant smiled.

“Right.”

Ava picked up the bag.

One year earlier, that same shape by the doorway meant:

leave,

hide,

don’t be seen.

Now it meant:

pajamas,

movie night,

coming home tomorrow.

Ava walked to the kitchen.

Opened the refrigerator.

Poured herself milk.

A little spilled onto the counter.

She looked at Grant.

He handed her a towel.

“That’s what towels are for.”

Ava wiped it.

No one yelled.

No one threw the bottle.

No one checked the driveway for inspectors.

Then the doorbell rang.

Ava froze for half a second.

Grant noticed.

“Want me to get it?”

She thought.

Then shook her head.

“I can.”

She walked to the front door.

Opened it.

Mia and her mother waited outside.

Ava grabbed her bag.

Before leaving, she looked back at Grant.

“You’ll be here tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

She smiled.

Then stepped outside willingly.

The door closed behind her.

Not because someone forced her out.

May you like

Because home had finally become a place she knew she could return to.

THE END
