Chapter 12 - THE MESSAGE RACHEL LEFT IN MELISSA’S VOICE
Dana reexamined Rachel’s incriminating voicemail: “By tomorrow, none of them will know where the money went.”
Modern audio analysis found the sentence was genuine but incomplete. A breath pattern indicated cuts before and after it. Commonwealth had supplied investigators with an exported clip, not the original file.
The full message was recovered from Peter’s damaged backup:
“Melissa, I moved the evidence lots. By tomorrow, none of them will know where the money went, and that is the only reason the serial record may survive. Don’t trust a confession you hear in my voice unless I say what Dad called our blue bicycle.”
The bicycle’s name was Junebug.
Commonwealth had turned an explanation into a confession.
Detective Price admitted he never demanded the original recording. Prosecutors relied on the bank’s technical export and Rachel’s disappearance.
“I helped them make suspicion look complete,” he said.
Dana reopened the theft case. She did not clear Rachel yet. Moving cash, falsifying her location, and evading investigators required legal review even if done to preserve evidence.
Martin Vale called a press conference. He accused federal agents of harassing a respected bank based on “a fugitive employee’s family mythology.” Commonwealth placed Nolan on administrative leave while praising his cooperation.
Privately, Nolan contacted Melissa.
He offered to restore her job and clear her credentials if she signed a statement that Rachel had manipulated her.
“Why would you care what a suspended teller says?” Melissa asked.
“Because people believe sisters.”
