Chapter 24 - THE QUESTION MELISSA FEARED TO ASK

Melissa’s hands began to tremble as she studied the cash.
The top bundle contained fifty-dollar notes. A visible serial matched the five-dollar bill’s destroyed-currency shipment range through a cross-reference code printed on the strap. Tiny dark squares along the paper edge suggested optical film.
“Where did you get this?” she asked.
Eli said nothing for one beat.
The security guard took one step closer. Customers continued watching.
Then Eli slowly reached into his hoodie pocket.
Nolan shouted, “Hands where we can see them.”
Eli froze.
Caleb turned on Nolan. “He is five. Stop issuing tactical commands unless you see a threat.”
The local supervisor agreed and told Eli he could move slowly. Melissa kept both hands visible above the counter so he would not feel surrounded by hidden movement.
Eli pulled out a small folded note.
He carefully placed it on top of the cash.
“My mom told me…”
His calm voice weakened for the first time. He pressed his lips together, regaining the sequence he had practiced.
He gently pushed the note forward.
“…to bring it here…”
Melissa stared at the folded paper.
Her name was written across the outside in blue ink.
The same backward curve shaped the M. The final a remained open, a habit Rachel developed after breaking her wrist in eighth grade. Melissa had seen that handwriting on grocery lists, birthday cards, and the note Caleb failed to deliver five years earlier.
Nolan saw recognition on her face.
“Do not touch it,” he said. “It may be stolen bank property.”
“A letter addressed to me is not bank property.”
“If it was transported with stolen currency, it is evidence.”
“Which is why twelve cameras are recording chain of custody.”

Dana’s evidence team entered the lobby with Eli’s attorney and child advocate. They stopped beyond the counter rather than rushing him.
Eli kept one hand on the folded paper.
