Chapter 9 - THE ACCIDENT PETER CARTER INVESTIGATED
Peter Carter’s fatal crash had been blamed on ice. Dana obtained the state vehicle inspection and found a detail omitted from the public report: a brake-fluid line had been cut, then partially resealed with material designed to fail under pressure.
The medical examiner classified Peter’s death as undetermined after the new evidence. There was no proof identifying who altered the vehicle.
Peter left an encrypted case file with his former partner. Most entries were corrupted, but one audio fragment survived.
“Rachel did not steal the cash,” Peter said. “She moved it before they could erase the serials. The bag is evidence, not profit.”
Melissa replayed the sentence.
If Rachel removed the money without authorization, she may still have committed a crime. Her motive changed its meaning but did not automatically legalize it.
Peter’s notes said the cash was divided into four evidence lots. One went to a federal contact. One remained with Rachel. One was hidden “where Samuel first counted it.” The fourth was described only as insurance for the child.
Eli had not yet been born when Rachel disappeared—or at least his official birth date came later.
Dana traced Peter’s investigation to abandoned Warehouse 12, where Samuel Grant died eighteen years earlier. Commonwealth still owned the property through a subsidiary.
A court-authorized search found the building empty except for a floor safe beneath the old counting room.
Inside were currency straps, photographs of Martin Vale meeting armored-car contractors, and Samuel’s handwritten audit notebook.
