Chapter 4 - THE GUARD WHO REMEMBERED RACHEL
Caleb Dunn had worked bank security for sixteen years. He was broad-shouldered, quiet, and better at calming frightened customers than intimidating them.
When Melissa asked about the night Rachel disappeared, Caleb first repeated his old statement: he saw nothing unusual.
Then she showed him the five-dollar bill.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
“Why does everyone ask for the bill before answering?”
Caleb took her into the empty employee lounge. He admitted Rachel came to the branch after closing on the night of the theft. She carried no bag. She asked to inspect a cash shipment that had supposedly arrived from the Federal Reserve processing center.
“Nolan told me she was authorized,” Caleb said.
Nolan had been assistant manager then.
Rachel discovered the straps on several bundles had valid Commonwealth barcodes but no matching shipment record. She photographed them. Before she left, she gave Caleb a folded note and told him to deliver it to Peter if anything happened.
“Did you?”
“Nolan found it during a locker search the next morning. He said Rachel used me to remove bank evidence and threatened to charge me.”
Caleb chose his job and remained silent.
“What did the note say?”
“I never opened it.”
Melissa felt anger before sympathy. “You watched them call her a thief for five years.”
“Yes.”
Caleb did not ask forgiveness.

He remembered one detail from the envelope: Rachel had written Melissa’s name across the front in blue ink.
The same handwriting now appeared on the five-dollar bill.
