Chapter 25 - THE HANDWRITING ON THE OUTSIDE

Eli looked at Melissa through the glass partition.

“…if something happened to her.”

The room went even quieter.

Melissa’s face began to change. She recognized more than handwriting now. Rachel always folded urgent notes inward twice, then tucked the lower-right corner beneath the upper crease. Their father taught them the method so warehouse messages would not open when carried.

Her breathing caught.

The security guard noticed her reaction. So did Dana.

Martin stepped into view behind Eli.

“Melissa, your sister is a wanted suspect. That note may contain instructions to move stolen funds. Anything you do now could make you part of her offense.”

The warning was legally incomplete but emotionally precise. For five years, fear of becoming Rachel’s accomplice had kept Melissa from challenging Commonwealth’s story.

She looked from the note to Eli, then back to the note.

“No,” she whispered.

It was not denial of the handwriting. It was grief at what the message meant: Rachel expected something to happen and sent her child into the institution she feared.

Melissa reached forward with shaking fingers.

Dana intervened calmly. “Before you touch it, we need consent from Eli and an evidence protocol. The note is addressed to you, but he is the person delivering it.”

Eli nodded. “She said Melissa opens it.”

His attorney confirmed that he understood the limited choice as well as a five-year-old could. Dana placed a transparent evidence sheet beneath the note without unfolding it. Every person near the counter stated their name and position for the independent recordings.

Martin objected that federal agents lacked a warrant to examine bank property. Dana answered that no one had established the cash belonged to Commonwealth, and exigent concerns about Rachel’s safety justified reading a voluntarily delivered message addressed to Melissa.

Nolan tried to trigger the altered panic system. Caleb blocked his hand from the button without striking him.

“Local police are already here,” Caleb said. “Who else were you calling?”

Nolan withdrew.

Melissa’s fingers touched the edge of the folded paper.

She paused.

Once the note opened, Rachel’s words could accuse Martin, confess to theft, reveal her location, or prove the entire plan was another layer of manipulation. Melissa would no longer be able to preserve the sister she remembered by avoiding the woman Rachel had become.

Eli watched her.

“Mom said you would be scared,” he whispered.

“Did she tell you what I should do?”

“No. She said this time you get to choose.”

Melissa lifted the tucked corner.
