Chapter 14 - THE NOTARY WHO KEPT ONE CASSETTE
Miriam Webb requested immunity before speaking again.
She admitted notarizing the false storage authorization at Nolan’s request. He told her Rachel had stolen bank property and that retrieving Samuel’s tapes would protect the family from obstruction charges.
Miriam kept one cassette because Nolan became frightened when he saw its label.
The tape contained Samuel dictating a meeting with Martin Vale. Samuel said diverted cash was being used not only for private profit but for unreported political payments and emergency “liquidity patches” when Commonwealth’s smaller branches fell below internal reserve targets.
Martin argued the phrase described lawful cash management. The recording never captured him admitting diversion.
Near the end, Samuel said, “If you keep asking Nolan to alter destruction weights, the boy will carry this crime before he is old enough to understand it.”
Nolan had been seventeen and working summers in the warehouse. Samuel knew his involvement began as a minor following Martin’s instructions.
Miriam broke down. “I spent years protecting him from something he kept choosing as an adult.”
She surrendered emails showing Nolan asked her to destroy the cassette three days before Rachel vanished. She lied and said she had.
The statute of limitations complicated old conduct, but recent obstruction remained chargeable.
Nolan attacked first. He released evidence that Miriam accepted cash from Rachel after the theft. Miriam admitted receiving twenty thousand dollars to support Eli’s hidden medical care.
The money came from one of the disputed bundles.

Helping a child did not make its source lawful. Prosecutors now had to examine Miriam as both witness and possible participant.
Every person Rachel trusted carried compromised hands.
