Chapter 18 - THE WOMAN WHO SENT ELI TOWARD THE BANK
Dana found Miriam’s car at a church parking lot. Inside was a recorded message.
Miriam said Rachel had arranged to meet Owen Marsh and exchange the fourth evidence lot for proof of who ordered Peter’s surveillance. Rachel expected betrayal and asked Miriam to move Eli only if she missed a check-in.
Miriam took him to a retired teacher’s home. Within hours, someone attempted to access the address through a sealed family-court portal. She moved again.
“Eli knows the final route,” Miriam said on the recording. “Rachel taught him landmarks instead of an address so no file could reveal it. I was told not to accompany him into the bank. She believes a child alone in a crowded lobby is harder for corporate security to quietly remove.”
Melissa could barely listen.
Rachel’s reasoning was strategic and unacceptable. She had built a plan around the expectation that strangers would hesitate to harm a visible child. She had also placed the burden of exposing adults on Eli.
Dana sought a protective custody order allowing Eli’s attorney to receive him at the branch. The court authorized a child advocate, police presence outside, and medical support nearby. Officers could not seize him merely for carrying cash; they needed to protect him while determining lawful custody and evidence handling.
Commonwealth learned enough of the plan to prepare. Martin ordered additional corporate security and announced a “routine cash-handling drill” at midday.
Nolan returned from administrative leave as an adviser, claiming specialized knowledge of the alleged stolen currency.
Melissa objected. The bank said she lacked authority.
At 11:43, every public clock in the branch lost seven minutes.
At 11:51, the local police liaison received a false emergency call directing units three blocks away.
At 11:56, Caleb entered in uniform despite his suspension.

At noon, the bank doors opened.
