Chapter 21 - THE BANK THAT TRIED TO CLOSE AT NOON
Martin ordered the branch closed for a “credible security concern.” The independent monitor demanded the factual basis. Martin cited Rachel’s suspected stolen cash and an unaccompanied minor.
The monitor contacted the judge, who issued a direct instruction: the branch could restrict new customers only if local police identified a safety threat. Carrying currency was not itself such a threat.
Martin changed tactics. He instructed tellers not to accept any transaction from Eli and ordered employees to redirect him to a private conference room with a child-services specialist.
The supposed specialist worked for Commonwealth’s crisis law firm.
Melissa printed the court’s protective order and placed it beneath her counter. Eli was to remain in public view until his attorney and the designated child advocate reached him. Any cash or note would be secured jointly by local police and Dana’s evidence team.
Caleb inspected the lobby cameras. Their live feeds worked, but recording storage had been redirected to a corporate server Martin controlled.
Customers were already filming after the false alarm. Melissa quietly told one regular customer that bank policy allowed recording in the public lobby unless it captured protected account information. Within minutes, at least a dozen independent phones faced Window Six.
The tactic carried privacy risks. Melissa asked people to keep other customers’ documents out of frame. A journalist in line began streaming only the open lobby and counter front.
Nolan noticed.
“You’re creating a spectacle,” he told Melissa.
“No. I’m preventing a private room.”
At 12:24, the branch’s glass entrance opened again.
A chubby little boy in an oversized gray hoodie stepped inside. His sneakers were untied. Both hands gripped the handles of a duffel bag that dragged against the floor.
