Chapter 13 - THE MONEY WASN'T STOLEN

The trust audit mattered.
Evelyn had alleged Ryan was abusing Lily’s settlement.
Audit found:
housing request reasonable,
caregiver costs appropriate,
therapy expenses documented.
One problem:
Ryan had used $22,000 of a trust-funded home renovation budget for a home office improvement partly benefiting him personally.
Not theft.
Allocation error.
He reimbursed $8,500 after valuation.
That mattered.
Ryan was not perfect.
Then audit reviewed Evelyn’s proposed guardianship budget.
If appointed, she planned:
$9,800 monthly household support,
private school,
full-time nanny,
therapy,
transportation.
Some reasonable.
Some inflated.
No secret payments to herself.
No mansion purchase.
Evelyn’s motive was not getting rich.
It was control.
That was more unsettling.
Money was the mechanism that would let her define Lily’s life.
Claire’s settlement created resources.
Evelyn wanted authority over how those resources shaped the child.
Ryan finally understood:

Evelyn truly believed she was the better parent.
