Chapter 2 - THE WORD DISCIPLINE

Ryan took Lily to the emergency department.
She had been inside the freezer less than three minutes.
Lucky.
No hypothermia.
No frost injury.
No head trauma.
A red mark on her cheek.
Finger bruising near her upper arm.
The doctor asked:
“Did Grandma hit you?”
Lily nodded.
Ryan sat beside her.
Did not interrupt.
Then:
“Has Grandma put you in the freezer before?”
Lily looked at Ryan.
His stomach dropped.
“Tell her the truth, baby.”
Lily whispered:
“Two times.”
Ryan stopped breathing.
The doctor asked:
“For how long?”
Lily shrugged.
“Till I’m good.”
Mandatory reporting followed.
Police took statements.
Evelyn did not deny locking Lily inside.
That surprised everyone.
She called it:
“discipline.”
She claimed the freezer had been unplugged.
It had not.
Garage camera later showed it running.
Temperature:
38 degrees Fahrenheit.
Not frozen-solid cold.
Still an enclosed appliance.
Still dangerous.
Ryan asked:
“Why would anyone put a child in there at all?”
Evelyn answered through attorney Lauren Pierce:
“Because Lily had begun having violent tantrums, destroying property, and threatening to run away. Mrs. Bennett used an inappropriate but brief time-out method. She deeply regrets it.”
Mrs. Bennett.
Not Grandma.
Not Evelyn.
Legal distance.
Lauren was good.
Then she added:
“Ryan Carter’s repeated work absences and inability to manage Lily’s escalating behavior are part of a larger safety concern.”
Ryan stared.
“My inability?”
Lauren continued:
“Mrs. Bennett has been documenting concerns for months.”
May you like
There.
The freezer was already being placed inside another story.
