Chapter 7 - THE CAMERA IN THE GARAGE

Ryan’s garage camera recorded motion only.
Not every minute.
It captured the night of rescue.
Evelyn slapping Lily.
Grabbing her arm.
Shoving her toward the freezer.
Forcing her inside.
Closing lid.
Locking latch.
Walking away.
Clear.
No audio until Ryan entered because the camera microphone was disabled.
Lauren Pierce could not dispute the act.
So she reframed intent.
Evelyn believed:
the freezer was safe,
the temperature was mild,
the punishment brief,
Lily had been kicking and biting.
Did video show Lily attacking?
No.
Before the slap, Lily stood beside a storage bin holding a piece of paper.
What paper?
Ryan enlarged the footage.
White envelope.
Evelyn took it from Lily’s hand before grabbing her.
That mattered.
Police searched the garage with consent.
Behind the freezer:
an open storage bin labeled CLAIRE.
Inside:
old clothes,
photos,
papers.
One envelope was missing.
Ryan looked at Evelyn.
“What was Lily holding?”
Evelyn said:
“Nothing important.”
Wrong answer.

Because the punishment may not have been about behavior.
It may have been about what Lily found.
