Chapter 3 - THE FILE ON RYAN
Evelyn had a file.
Two inches thick.

LILY — SAFETY / RYAN.
Inside:
school emails,
therapy notes,
photographs,
text messages,
calendar records,
screenshots.
Ryan’s attorney, Maya Sloan, reviewed everything.
Some of it looked bad.
Ryan had missed:
two school events,
one pediatric follow-up,
a parent conference.
Work.
Then texts.
RYAN:
I can’t do another meltdown tonight.
RYAN:
She’s impossible when she gets like this.
RYAN:
I need one damn hour without screaming.
Private frustration.
Not threats.
Evelyn had preserved them.
Then photos:
a broken lamp,
crayon on a wall,
Lily’s bedroom trashed after a tantrum,
a bruise on Lily’s shin.
Normal six-year-old chaos.
Reframed as:
HOME INSTABILITY.
Then a teacher email:
Lily appears unusually tired and anxious on Mondays.
Mondays followed weekends with Ryan.
That looked worse.
Ryan stared at it.
“I never saw this.”
Maya checked.
The email went to:
Ryan,
school counselor,
and Evelyn.
Why Evelyn?
Because she was listed as emergency contact after Claire’s death.
Ryan had never removed her.
Then Maya looked at the dates.
The worst Monday behavior followed weekends when Evelyn stayed overnight or babysat.
Not when Ryan was alone with Lily.
Pattern.
Maybe coincidence.
Then another page.
Evelyn had consulted a custody attorney four months earlier.
Question:
Can a grandparent seek guardianship when surviving parent is emotionally unstable and child displays signs of fear?
Ryan’s face changed.
“She was building this before the freezer.”
