Chapter 5 - EVELYN'S GRIEF
Ryan wanted Evelyn written off as greedy.
Maya refused.
“Grief matters.”
Ryan stared.
“She put my daughter in a freezer.”
“Yes.”
“That ends the analysis.”
“No. It ends any defense of the act. It does not explain everything else.”
Claire had been Evelyn’s only child.
After the crash, Evelyn became obsessed with Lily.
She:
attended school events,
bought clothes,
kept a bedroom for Lily,
called every morning,
tracked medications.
Some of that helped.
Some suffocated.
Ryan worked constantly during the first six months after Claire’s death because working was easier than coming home to silence.
Evelyn filled the gap.
Then Ryan began rebuilding.
Therapy.
New routines.
More time with Lily.
Evelyn’s role shrank.
She hated it.
Not because she wanted money first.
Because Lily felt like the last living piece of Claire she could still organize.
Then the trust added structure.
Forms.
Approvals.
Authority.
Evelyn saw Ryan as:
the man who still had the child,
the house,
the legal rights,
the trust seat.
She had memories.
And grief.
That imbalance became unbearable.
Maya said:
“Power can become a substitute for mourning.”
Ryan hated the sympathy.

Understanding was not forgiveness.
