Chapter 14 - THE APOLOGY THAT FAILED
Six months later Evelyn requested a therapeutic meeting with Ryan.
No Lily.
Ryan agreed.
She looked older.
Not softer.
She said:
“I’m sorry about the freezer.”
Ryan waited.
“I should not have put her there.”
Still waited.
Then:
“But you have to understand how difficult she had become.”
Ryan stood.
Therapist stopped him.
“Sit.”
He did.
Evelyn continued:
“She hits. She screams. She lies.”
Ryan’s voice was quiet.
“She was grieving.”
“So was I.”
There.
The competition.
Who suffered more.
Ryan said:
“You punished a six-year-old for symptoms you helped create.”
Evelyn cried.
“You took Claire from me.”
Ryan stared.
“Claire married me.”
“She changed.”
“She grew up.”
Evelyn flinched.
That was the wound.
Then Ryan said:
“Lily is not your second chance to keep Claire from leaving.”
Evelyn looked at him.
For the first time, she had no argument.
Not acceptance.
No argument.
The meeting ended.
