Chapter 15 - THE FIRST SLICE

One year later, Ethan turned nine.

No ballroom.

No hundred guests.

A garden lunch.

Dominic.

Ethan.

A few family members.

Grace and Lily invited as guests, not staff.

Sofia was not there.

Her temporary-guardian designation had been removed.

Elena’s trust was amended through court-approved process:

independent guardian panel,

no vendor owned by a potential guardian,

mandatory conflict disclosures,

no emergency professional fees without trustee review.

Gabriel Shaw was awaiting trial.

Mason had pleaded guilty to participating in the poisoning scheme and cooperating.

The toxic compound had never entered Ethan’s body.

That mattered every day.

A small birthday cake sat on the table.

Ethan looked at Lily.

“You want to knock this one over too?”

Lily, now three, laughed.

“No!”

Dominic cut the cake himself.

Then stopped.

The old tradition said Ethan received the first slice.

Dominic looked at his son.

“You still want that?”

Ethan shrugged.

“Sure.”

Dominic handed him the plate.

Then waited.

Ethan took one bite.

Nothing happened.

No guards moved.

No one watched the doors.

Grace exhaled without realizing she had been holding her breath.

Lily pointed at the cake.

“Good?”

Ethan smiled.

“Good.”

Dominic looked toward Grace.

A year earlier, he had demanded:

WHO DID THIS?

He had believed the answer would be a rival.

An enemy.

Someone outside the family.

The truth had been more complicated.

Gabriel had built the plan.

Mason had carried it out.

Sofia had created the conditions while telling herself she was protecting Ethan.

Dominic had hidden real danger because he believed admitting weakness would cost him control.

Everyone had called their own choices protection.

Only Lily had acted without wanting anything.

She had seen something wrong.

And stopped it.

Dominic raised his glass.

“To Lily.”

Lily looked confused.

“For cake?”

Dominic smiled.

“For cake.”

Grace laughed.

Ethan laughed too.

The first slice remained half eaten on the plate.

Ordinary.

Safe.

May you like

That was enough.

THE END
