Chapter 12 - SOPHIE'S PART

Sophie had encouraged Tyler.

Emails showed:

SOPHIE:

Stop treating Claire like landlord royalty.

TYLER:

She legally owns it.

SOPHIE:

Because Mom and Dad were desperate. That doesn’t make it morally hers.

Then:

SOPHIE:

If the bank sees family equity, they’ll lend.

TYLER:

Need Claire.

SOPHIE:

Maybe not if Dad signs support.

Sophie did not forge Claire’s name.

Did not create a lien.

But she helped construct the story that Claire’s ownership did not deserve full respect because it began during family desperation.

Claire confronted her.

Sophie said:

“You took advantage of them.”

Claire stared.

“I stopped a foreclosure.”

Sophie answered:

“And got the house.”

Both sentences were true.

Context mattered.
