Chapter 3 - THE FIVE-YEAR AGREEMENT

Claire did not want her parents feeling like tenants.

So Grace Bennett, already her attorney and friend, drafted a simple family agreement.

It said Richard and Evelyn could remain for five years.

After that:

renew,

buy Claire out,

or relocate.

Three rules mattered.

No new liens against the property.

No long-term occupancy by other adults without Claire’s written approval.

No representing themselves as owners in financing documents.

Evelyn laughed when she signed.

“Claire, we’re family.”

Claire answered:

“That’s why I want it clear.”
