Chapter 5 - THE LOCKOUT

The five-year agreement expired.
Claire offered a one-year extension.
Conditions:
Tyler and Sophie move out within sixty days,
household contribution increases modestly,
no financial encumbrances.
Evelyn refused.
“You’re charging your parents rent?”
“It covers part of taxes and insurance.”
“We raised you.”
Claire looked at her.
“That isn’t a property agreement.”
Evelyn called her cold.
Tyler called her selfish.
Then Claire arrived one Saturday with groceries.
Her key did not work.
She tried again.
Nothing.
Evelyn opened the door from inside.
“We changed the locks.”
Claire stared.
“Why?”
“Because Tyler says you keep barging in.”
“It’s my house.”
Evelyn answered:
“Not emotionally.”
May you like
Then shut the door.
That was the night Claire remembered in the teaser.
