Chapter 14 - THE MOVERS
Closing happened on a Thursday.
The teaser happened Friday morning.
The new owners allowed Claire to supervise final turnover because she remained seller of record.
Movers arrived.
Boxes came out.
Evelyn saw them and finally accepted the sale was real.
That was when she grabbed Claire.
“You can’t do this!”
But it was already done.
The broken vase on the floor had belonged to Evelyn’s mother.
Claire saw her staring at it.
She told the mover:
“Stop.”
Then crouched.
Picked up the largest pieces.
Evelyn looked surprised.
Claire said:
“I’ll pay to have it restored if it can be.”
Evelyn whispered:
“After all this?”
