Chapter 13 - CARMEN'S HISTORY

Lucy assumed Carmen was fearless by nature.
She was not.
Carmen had been married at nineteen.
Her husband, Luis, controlled every dollar.
He never broke her bones.
He did:
hide bills,
take her paycheck,
decide where she went,
tell neighbors she was unstable,
threaten to keep their children if she left.
Carmen stayed seventeen years.
Then one day a neighbor opened a door.
Not dramatically.
Just let Carmen use a phone.
That was why Carmen recognized Lucy’s face in the hallway.
Not because every story was identical.
Because fear has familiar posture.
Lucy asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
Carmen shrugged.
“Your story needed to be yours.”
Good.
No saint.
No savior.
Then Carmen added:
“And I kept your mail. That was wrong.”
Lucy blinked.
“You were trying to help.”
“Still wrong.”
Carmen tapped her cane.
May you like
“People who help can still cross lines.”
That sentence stayed.
