Chapter 6 - CARMEN'S DOORBELL CAMERA

Carmen had a doorbell camera.

Cheap.

Battery-powered.

Installed after packages disappeared.

It recorded the hallway.

The video showed:

Lucy running with Emiliano,

Adrian pursuing,

Lucy pounding on Carmen’s door,

Adrian grabbing her from behind,

the first visible slap,

his raised hand,

Carmen blocking him with the cane.

Clear.

No audio for the first seconds.

Then audio engaged.

“COME HOME!”

“NO!”

“ENOUGH.”

Adrian’s attorney challenged context.

Fine.

But not the visible conduct.

Lauren pivoted to something else.

Carmen had used a cane against Adrian.

Was that assault?

Potentially, depending on reasonableness.

Video showed Adrian’s hand raised toward Lucy.

Carmen’s intervention appeared defensive.

No repeated strikes.

No chasing him.

Good.

Then Lauren raised a harder issue:

Carmen had been keeping Lucy’s mail.

Carmen admitted three envelopes remained unopened in her apartment.

She said she intended to give them directly to Lucy.

Could withholding mail be improper?

Yes.

Rachel advised Carmen to tell the truth and stop improvising.

Carmen answered:

“I was afraid he would take them.”

That fear now looked justified.

Still, good intentions did not create unlimited rights.

Everyone in this case would eventually learn that.
