The violence had started over an envelope.
That was the immediate trigger.
On the afternoon of the hallway incident, Lucy found a certified notice tucked behind the microwave.
Metro Commercial Lending.
FINAL DEFAULT NOTICE.
She opened it.
Saw her name.
Saw $92,000.
Saw personal guarantee.
She confronted Adrian.
“What is this?”
He froze.
Then said:
“It’s handled.”
“It has my name.”
“It’s business.”
“What business?”
He took the letter.
Lucy grabbed it back.
Emiliano was in his playpen.
He started crying because their voices rose.
Adrian said:
“Pick him up.”
Lucy answered:
“No. Explain this.”
Emiliano cried harder.
Adrian snapped:
“Make him stop.”
Lucy stared.
“He’s a baby.”
Adrian walked to the playpen.
Emiliano reached up.
Adrian grabbed him too quickly.
The child twisted.
Cried.
Then Adrian struck him.
Not because Emiliano had done anything.
Because Adrian wanted control of the room and the baby’s noise felt like defiance.
That mattered.
No financial motive excused the violence.
No debt caused the hand to move.
