Chapter 8 - THE PHONE IN THE DRAWER
Police obtained Adrian’s second phone after Lucy disclosed seeing it before.
He called it the work phone.
Messages showed something worse than debt.
Adrian had been monitoring Lucy.
Not spyware.
Simpler.
He had logged her iCloud account into an old tablet in the apartment.
Shared location.
Messages.
Photos.
He knew when she:
visited Carmen,
went to the pharmacy,
met her sister,
stayed late at work.
Why?
Lauren called it shared-family technology.
Adrian called it concern.
Lucy called it surveillance.
Then texts to his friend Marcus:
ADRIAN:
She thinks she can leave whenever.
MARCUS:
Can she?
ADRIAN:
Not with all this debt under her name.
That sentence changed the case.
Another:
MARCUS:
You put too much on her credit.
ADRIAN:
It keeps us together until I fix it.
There.
Not just hiding failure.
Leverage.
Adrian understood that debt could make leaving harder.
Then:
ADRIAN:
Once the route turns profit, none of this matters.
